Successful Living After Stroke: Why This Blog?

cva stroke Sep 03, 2020

There are so many blogs about everything on the internet, so why create another one?

Let me introduce myself. I am Dr. Diane Thompson and I’m a triple board-certified physician.  My specialty is Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, with subspecialty board certification in Brain Injury Medicine.  Because I understood that many of our chronic diseases are due to lifestyle-related behaviors, I took it upon myself to learn about Lifestyle Medicine, and in 2017, I was one of about 200 physicians in the United States to pass the inaugural boards. I have also pursued training in Health Coaching, Behavior Change Psychology, and in Personal Development.  The goal of this training and expertise is to give you the best of me.

For several years now, I have been the Medical Director of several Stroke Specialty Inpatient Rehabilitation Units at one of the top hospitals in the country, and I also oversee the outpatient Cardiac and Pulmonary rehabilitation program.  With this patient mix, I have found that a significant percentage of patients are either high risk for stroke or have had a stroke and are trying to make sense of their new normal.

If you know anyone who has had a stroke you understand that for that person and their loved ones, life is never the same.  Stroke can leave the survivor with obvious impairments in mobility, activities of daily living (ADL), cognition, and speech and language.  What is less obvious is fatigue, depression, a lack of focus, feeling overwhelmed, fear of future stroke, uncertainty about roles and relationships, concerns about sex and attractiveness, lack of confidence about performing at work, and difficulty dealing with the new normal. In addition, without making sure to make the necessary lifestyle changes, there is a risk of stroke recurrence.

Often, two patients with similar impairments but different support systems end up differently; one may return to work and life while the other remains home on disability.  Patients follow up with me for different things. Some may want my Rehabilitation or Lifestyle Medicine expertise, while others want my perspective, coaching, or a plan to help them return to living.

This blog is unique in much the way my views on life or my interactions with patients are unique.  It will provide a marriage among things I am most passionate about- Rehabilitation Medicine, Brain Injury, Lifestyle Medicine, and Personal Development, and I will share information here that will help stroke survivors and their support system adjust, adapt, and attain a new normal and a new lease on life.
